Lake Caroline stand-off ends

MADISON COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - A standoff in the Lake Caroline subdivision of Madison County ends when officials find the man who held them at bay dead inside his home.

The man is identified as Keith Mitts, 48, barricaded himself in his home and exchanged gunfire with sheriff's deputies.

Madison County Sheriff Toby Trowbridge says Mitts was heavily armed, and warned all Lake Caroline residents to stay away from the area. The house is located at 109 Southampton Circle, near the clubhouse.

The standoff started Friday afternoon when deputies tried to serve Mitts with some warrants. The sheriff did not specify what the warrants were for. Mitts fired on the officers as they approached his house, but no one was injured.

Earlier in the day, Mitts had visited the Pine Grove Outreach Center, a psychiatrist's office on Key Drive in Madison. Sources say while he was there, he made threats against his wife or employees of the office. His wife and son were also spotted at the office, but they are now in a safe area.

SWAT officers are on the scene near the house, as is an armored personnel carrier. The Madison County Emergency Operations Center set up a command post near the Lake Caroline entrance.

In the meantime, the residents of about a dozen houses on Southampton Circle were not allowed to return home, out of concerns for their safety. Many went to spend Friday night with family members or friends who live elsewhere.

One resident who lives across the street from Mitts tried to retrieve an overnight bag, but deputies turned him away. Madison County supervisor Karl Banks also lives across the street from Mitts.
