Men accused of shooting officer plead not guilty

Associated Press - November 10, 2009 7:24 PM ET

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - An escaped inmate from a Mississippi prison and another man accused of attempted murder in the shooting of a Nashville police officer have pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Twenty-9-year-old Joseph Jackson, the escaped convict, and 25-year-old Cortney Logan of Louisville, Ky., were arraigned Tuesday.

The men were indicted after police said Jackson shot Sgt. Mark Chesnut several times in June after the officer pulled them over in Nashville.

According to Mississippi prison officials, Jackson escaped earlier June 25 during a visit to an eye doctor in Greenwood, Miss. Police have said Logan entered the office, fired a shot into the air and 1 of them took a weapon from Jackson's guard.

According to WTVF-TV, Chesnut has returned to work.
