New ship, lab for NOAA in Pascagoula

Associated Press - November 6, 2009 4:04 PM ET

PASCGOULA, Miss. (AP) - The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Friday added a new fisheries survey ship to its fleet and dedicated a new research lab in Pascagoula.

The NOAA Ship Pisces and the fisheries laboratory in Pascagoula will support research in the Gulf of Mexico, southeastern United States and the Caribbean.

NOAA administrator Jane Lubchenco spoke at both events.

The Pisces is equipped with quiet-hull technology giving scientists a chance to study fish populations and collect oceanographic data with minimal impact on fish and marine mammal behavior.

The new laboratory replaces one destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The building contains office space for 104 scientists, a library and meeting rooms.

The structure is also designed to be more hurricane resistant, with a first floor elevation of 17 feet.
