PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - Construction has officially begun on a new $20 million medical park to help improve health and wellness in Jackson County. Singing River Health System broke ground for the state of the art facility on Denny Avenue in Pascagoula. Leaders are hoping the facility will help with this troubled economy.

The dirt has been dumped and turned for Singing River Health System's new mega medical park.

"This facility is going to add on to an already great healthcare system," Jackson County Board of Supervisors President Manly Barton said.

Barton said he is excited hospital officials are investing millions into better serving the ill and injured.

"I think it has to do a lot with the leadership that is in place, and the plan they put together a number of years ago to upgrade the facilities and service," Barton said.

The 70,000 square foot park will be located in Pascagoula and house several centers, including Neuroscience and Medical Wellness. CEO Chris Anderson said the community will be impressed with the modern design.

"There is no facility like this in Jackson County," Anderson said about the new medical park. "This is going to be a facility that will have indoor pools, weights, but it has a medical twist. The idea is to help people improve their health and physical fitness is a large part of that. We will have treadmills, and weights, and all the things you will see in a typical gym."

Anderson said a facility like this is needed because the demand for healthcare continues to grow, and people always look for a more convenient place to get medical help.

"You don't have to navigate through a hospital. You go to a beautiful place, you come through the front door, you register quickly and you get in and out."

The multimillion-dollar complex will also have a big economic impact on Jackson County.

"There will be between 40 to 50 new jobs. Having facilities like this in the community, it makes it easier to attract other business to town," Anderson said.

The project is expected to be complete in 2011. Hospital officials are predicting that more than 150,000 people will visit the facility annually once it opens.
