Missing boater's body found in Westwego canal

Associated Press - November 2, 2009 6:24 PM ET

GRETNA, La. (AP) - The body of a boater missing in Bayou Segnette since late last week has been found in the Westwego Canal.

Col. John Fortunato, a spokesman for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, says 44-year-old Robert Dominique's body was pulled from the water Monday by members of the department's emergency rescue crew.

The parish coroner's office will perform an autopsy to determine how Dominique died.

The Coast Guard says the Westwego native's boat was found adrift and unmanned Saturday morning. He operated the boat near a fishing camp in Bayou Segnette after a friend dropped him off at a boat launch Friday.

State wildlife and fisheries officials found the boat with a life jacket inside. The Coast Guard then launched rescue helicopters and rescue boats Sunday and early Monday, and the sheriff's office helped with the search.
