Ministers appeal to keep Wednesdays for church

Associated Press - October 27, 2009 7:04 PM ET

GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) - Ministers in Greenwood have appealed to private and public school administrators to stop scheduling extraccurricular activities on Wednesday night, when most churches offer mid-week services.

Seventeen ministers from the Greenwood-Leflore County Ministerial Association signed the appeal that appeared as a letter to the editor in the Greenwood Commonwealth newspaper.

The Rev. Greg Plata of St. Francis of Assisi and Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Churches says ministers have noticed smaller sanctuary crowds on Wednesday.

Leflore County School Superintendent Jean Hall says the district holds a few activities on Wednesday, but that's only because of scheduling conflicts.
