MORGAN CITY, La. (AP) - Swiftships Shipbuilders LLC says it has been awarded a $181 million contract to build nine patrol boats for Iraq's Navy, a deal that will add about 100 additional workers.
The boats will be constructed at the company's yard in Morgan City by September 2010. Company president Calvin LeLeux says the contract is the second-most valuable ever acquired by the company.
Swiftships also is getting a $23.6 million contract to provide training for the boats for the Iraqi Navy.
The vessel is designed to operate in coastal waters out to approximately 200 miles from shore. The boat can accommodate eight crew members and four officers.
