JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Jackson County investigators believe they've cracked a two and a half year old hit and run case that left a St. Martin family without a mother.
Tuesday morning, Sheriff Mike Byrd announced the arrest of William Dale Bullock, 49, from St. Martin. He was arrested Monday night at his home on Derry Lane.
Bullock is charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in a death. Thuan Nguyen, 47, of St. Martin was killed. Investigators are still trying to determine if speed or alcohol may have contributed to the accident.
On January 13, 2007, the 47-year-old woman was walking to her relatives' house on Old Fort Bayou Road when she was hit by a van, and her body left on the side of the road.
The St. Martin woman left behind five children, who had already lost their father, grandfather, and oldest sister. Those three family members all died of cancer over the last decade.
Immediately after the fatal accident, investigators followed about 30 leads, but all came up empty.
At the time, Sheriff Mike Byrd told WLOX News, "I know their pain and we're going to do everything we can to try to find this person that's responsible, or persons, and bring them to justice."
Now, the Sheriff and his deputies believe they are fulfilling that promise, and bringing Nguyen's killer to justice.
William Dale Bullock is being held at the Jackson County Adult Detention Center. A 1991 GMC van that authorities believe Bullock was driving at the time of the accident was recovered this week in Texas.
