Official: Chapman Forest Products Plant closing

Associated Press - June 25, 2009 9:34 AM ET

GEORGIANA, Ala. (AP) - A Butler County economic development official says the Chapman Forest Products plant in Georgiana will close in less than two weeks, leaving 265 workers without jobs.

Ricky McLaney, executive director of the Butler County Commission for Economic Development, said it could drive the county's unemployment from its current 13.2% to more than 16%.

Workers at the plant are paid an average of $24,000 a year.

Managers at the plant - which has been owned by four companies in the past 100 years - laid off about 70 workers months ago, hoping for an economic turnaround. That didn't happen, throwing Butler County's second-largest employer out of business.
