BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - WLOX has learned that a group of investors met Wednesday night with league officials from the Southern Professional Hockey League.

The investors are trying to work out an agreement to secure an SPHL franchise for the Mississippi Gulf Coast. A reliable source close to the negotiations said local investors could make an announcement as early as next week that pro hockey will return next season in the SPHL.

Last week, Mississippi Sea Wolves owners announced that they had petitioned to the ECHL to suspend operations next season.

Traveling expenses took a toll on the Sea Wolves' profit margin. The team spent 101 days on the road during the 2008-2009 E C H L season.

The Southern Professional Hockey League presently has six teams, located in Knoxville, Columbus, Fayetteville, Huntsville, Richmond and Twin City, North Carolina. SPHL officials are also negotiating with potential owners in Pensacola.

The ECHL is a Double A league, while the SPHL is a Single A hockey league.
