HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - It was all about signing up and rolling up their sleeves for flu shots Monday at Oschner Medical Center-Hancock as we reach the height of flu season.
"Flu tends to heighten in occurrence in January and goes through March, so we still have half of January and well into February before we could see possible height of the season,” said Brenda Steudlein, Clinical Nurse Educator. "Last year we saw a really high number of flu cases, and it was equated to the fact that the shot wasn't as effective as it could be. We are seeing an excellent shot this year and it has really wiped out a great deal of the flu cases."
Why is it important to get your flu shot? According to a recent CDC map, Mississippi is in the moderate category when it comes to flu outbreaks, but in Louisiana there are widespread cases, and it’s also ramping up in Alabama.
"Really with interstate travel that happens through the Mississippi Gulf Coast, we don’t want to let our guard down,” Steudlein added.
The CDC also says more than 79,000 people died from the flu during the 2017-2018 season.
