PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - Parrotheads, you have less than 48 hours to vote on a potential name change for Buffett Beach.
The city is asking for residents' feedback after a push from a group of residents who want to see the beach back to its original name, Pascagoula Beach.
It was named after the “Cheeseburger in Paradise” singer in 2016 since Jimmy Buffett was born in Pascagoula.
Now some residents said they want the beach name to reflect its location.
“The problem we have with it is it’s Pascagoula Beach. There’s not another beach on the Gulf Coast named after somebody. It’s named after the city in which it stands. So that’s why we want it back to Pascagoula Beach,” said Terry Davis. He created a petition, and as of Saturday, 75 people had signed it.
The city is giving residents until close of business on Monday to submit feedback. If enough people want a name change, the city will send a recommendation to the county. If the county approves, it then goes to the legislature and the governor’s desk for approval.
