Coast retailers, casinos hope to cash in on National Championship game

SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - Gulf Coast sports books and some local retailers are hoping for lots of business Monday night as Alabama and Clemson tangle for the 2019 College Football Playoff National Championship. Monday morning at the Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort in D’Iberville, customers were already lining up to survey the board and place a few bets.

“We’re coming out of the wildcard weekend in the NFL and approaching the divisional playoffs, but the big story now is the National Championship. And being where we are, it’s Alabama crazy,” said Nico Sfanos, Scarlet Pearl Sports Book Director. “We’re going to be jam packed tonight with folks wearing red and white, crimson and white. And so far, a lot of the betting has gone toward Alabama."

Those in the retail world are also hoping to make a splash if the Tide rolls to another championship. If Alabama wins, the Dick’s Sporting Goods at the Promenade in D’Iberville will open their doors immediately to sell National Championship merchandise after the game.

“All my friends back home will be cheering, I’ll be cheering,” said store manager Nick Allen, who happens to be a Clemson fan. "But it would be good for revenue if Bama wins, so that would be the other thing for us.”
