BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - If you’re looking for something fun to do for the entire family during this holiday season, the Mississippi Coast Coliseum may have the perfect activity.
With Christmas right around the corner, hundreds are enjoying the holidays on skates. Almost 900 hundred people visited the Coliseum on Saturday alone for the opportunity to skate around.
It’s an annual tradition of offering seasonal ice skating to anyone interested. Hundreds of skates fly off the shelf each day that the Coliseum hosts an ice skating session. And once everyone laces up, they hit the ice. Sometimes, they literally are hitting the ice. That’s where Ice Guards like Luke Myer step in to help.
“It’s a great experience honestly, you get to see so many people try it," said Myer. "You get to see their reactions. If they fall they’re usually laughing, everything like that. It’s great, people of all ages, young and old. I don’t know, it is just such a unique thing.”
Many of the Ice Guards are just volunteers who love skating.
“I have been playing hockey for a couple years now," said Ice Guard Rayshawn Russel. "I just come out and help volunteer with the little kids and help out with ice skating.”
With Christmas just over a week away, the Coliseum is witnessing big turnouts at each ice skating session.
“Especially around Christmas time, it gets really slammed," said Myer. "We will be out of skates within 5-10 minutes. If you don’t show up an hour early, you’re probably not getting a pair of skates, especially now at this time of year. Thanksgiving break is usually when it picks up, and December its at an all time high.”
Participants have until January 6, 2019, to get their feet in a pair of skates and onto the ice. However, the event will be closed on Christmas and New Year’s Day. The cost is $12 per skater, which includes skate rentals and time on the ice. Times vary depending on the day. For more information on times, visit here.
