GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Gulfport's Main Street Association is getting a financial boost to move forward with a downtown development project. A planning grant from the Knight Foundation, through the Gulf Coast Community Foundation, will pay to prepare the construction documents and plans for the Backlot at Trackside Innovation District.
The development would be located north of the railroad tracks, adjacent to Hwy 49, and include the existing buildings that are Pop Brothers and Coast Roast. The public/private partnership will include retail space for shopping and dining, as well as public space for art, entertainment and community gatherings. The structures would be a mix of refurbished cargo containers and new construction. The shipping containers would be located on the south side of the project, near the railroad tracks, to establish an active edge.
“This type of growth in the Trackside Innovation District is going to have a tremendous impact on all of Gulfport. We are so pleased to be recognized, once again, by the Knight Foundation and the Gulf Coast Community Foundation as an organization and community that has innovative ideas,” says Laurie Toups, Director of Gulfport Main Street Assoc. “We are experiencing an exciting growth in Gulfport that can be directly attributed to our distinct character, engaged citizens, and sense of place.”
The Backlot at Trackside development is just one of many recommendations that came from the Master Plan Phase II Report presented in August 2018. Read more on the original announcement here: http://www.wlox.com/story/38923292/gulfport-main-street-presents-phase-ii-of-downtown-plan/
