Pass Christian woman holds winter clothing drive in honor of late husband

PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) - A Pass Christian woman is collecting clothes to help the less fortunate stay warm this winter in honor of her late husband.

Carmen Dedeaux is spending the holidays collecting warm clothing to donate to those in need. Though she’s just getting started, she’s already picked up a handful of pieces. and she handles each item with care.

“I’m washing things, I’m also sending stuff to the cleaners," she said as she folded clothes. “I’m asking for gently worn or new items because if I wouldn’t wear it, I wouldn’t want to give it to somebody else.”

It’s a noble effort for just one person to carry out, but Carmen says she doesn’t feel alone in this process. She and her husband Michael first came up with the idea about two years ago during a freeze.

“When the weather starts getting cold, we take things for granted. We don’t think about it when we’re sitting in our nice warm houses, that there are people less fortunate out there," Carmen explained.

The couple of more than 30 years planned to spend the holidays volunteering together. However, everything changed when Michael tragically died in a motorcycle accident in August.

“I was a bit depressed about Christmas coming up, the holidays," Carmen began. “But then this, when I started thinking about doing this, I started actually getting things, you know it makes me happy.”

She’s already teamed up with local churches and the Pass Christian library to collect donations. Carmen says being able to give back and see Michael’s vision come to light brings back the Christmas spirit. “He’d be really proud of me, and that’s what, that’s his famous words. Good deal.”

Now she moves on with a mission to bring others that same feeling of joy.
