GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A 22-year-old Gulfport man has been identified as the victim of a shooting that happened late Wednesday afternoon.
Brontavius O’Brien Keller died after being shot at a home on the north end of 57th Avenue.
Police say they responded to the area around 4:30 p.m. after receiving a call that shots had been fired.
"When police arrived, they found a deceased male. At this time the investigation is underway,” said Gulfport Police spokesperson Clayton Fulks.
Up the road from the crime scene, neighbor Sophia Slater heard the gunshots.
“I was inside helping my daughter with her homework, and I heard seven or eight shots,” Slater said. “My daughter ran in and she was scared, and I told her it was probably somebody testing their gun. We walked outside and we saw a body on the ground. It was loud, so many shots.”
Slater said his son and Keller played together when they were younger. His death now has her concerned about her younger children playing outside.
"The terrible part is my kids play in this area,” Slater added. “I can't let them come outside anymore, because look, someone is outside on the ground dead."
Police are still investigating how and why Keller was at the home.
Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove said Keller’s body has been sent to the state crime lab for an autopsy.
